My journey is different from most in that I began thinking about becoming a beekeeper in 2014 because my gardens were not producing fruits and vegetables, even though flowers were abundant. It was evident that this was due to a lack of pollinators.
After taking several classes, reading numerous books, and consulting with several master beekeepers, I decided to buy my first hive and all of the necessary beekeeping equipment.
The 2025 winter was brutal on my hives. I lost close to 30% of my hives, leaving me with 19. I am determined to rebuild and have installed and ordered several new queens to infuse new genetics into my bee yard. I am also changing my treatment schedule to ensure that I go into the winter with healthier bees.
One thing is certain: beekeeping is not for the faint of heart.
